Civtarion

The Civtarion project was started in 2001 by Jon Hermansen and Anders Kjeldsen. Jon had an idea of making a simple Civilization/Risk game that could be played in a web browser.

We started planning the project and figured out that we needed a software client and server for the game. The client was then made as a Shockwave application and the server was made using C#. Within a couple of months the game was up and running.

Most people seemed to like it despite it's state of not being complete. It might have been one of the first games of its genre to hit the web. Games like "War Online" came to our attention later, though.

In the autumn 2003 we put an end to the first version of Civtarion. We felt that we coulnd't do much more with it, so we decided to do some radical changes on the server and the client. The biggest change must have been that we wrote the client from scratch as a Java Applet. It took a couple of months to release Civtarion 2, but not even that became what we had hoped for. Too few features and too many bugs especially related to server/client synchronization.

In 2004 we decided that we wanted to take Civtarion even further. This time we wanted to plan it better than we had done earlier. We also wanted to give it a lot more features so that the game-play could compete with games like Civilization 3.

We're still working on Civtarion 3 today and we hope we can release it within 2005. Civtarion 3 is partly based on games like Civilization 3, Colonization and Planetarion. It takes a lot of resources to make such a game, but we hope that we can pull it of.
